SAPPHIRE, N.C. – Playing in their final event of the 2009 fall campaign, the Radford men’s golf team shot a nine-over 293 and sits tied for 10th following round one of the Hummingbird Intercollegiate hosted by Western Carolina.

The 36-hole event is being played on the Par 71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley layout.

For the second straight tournament, red-shirt freshman Weston Eklund (Charlottesville, Va. / Albemarle) is the top Highlander on the individual leaderboard after shooting a one-over 72. Thanks to three early birdies, Eklund was one-under after nine holes before bogeying the second and fourth holes. Eklund will enter the final round tied for 25th.

Both Lane Hite (Clarksville, Va. / Bluestone) and Kyle Bailey (Fincastle,Va. / James River) carded rounds of two-over 73 and sit one back of Eklund in a tie for 36th.

Paul Woodson (Powhatan, Va. / Powhatan), who was three-under following his first six holes, suffered a triple bogey on the par-4 17th hole before coming home at four-over 75.

Also competing for Radford is freshman Wade Wawner (Virginia Beach, Va. / Floyd E. Kellam), who opened with a six-over 77, putting him in a tie for 84th.

As a team, the Highlanders combined for 10 birdies and an eagle on their opening nine before shooting seven-over on the back side. Radford finished round one with 18 birdies and an eagle.

Kentucky holds to top spot in the team standings following a five-under 279, which is three strokes clear of Furman.

Furman’s Garland Ferrell fired one of 17 sub-par rounds and is at the top of the individual leaderboard after shooting a four-under 67.

Despite its current standing on the 18-team leaderboard, Radford is just eight strokes out of third place, currently held by Western Carolina and Akron.

The second and final round will be played Tuesday.
