CONWAY, S.C. – Performances in throws events from senior Matt Dobson (Centreville, Va./Chantilly) and freshman Aimee Veatch (Roanoke, Va./Cave Spring) highlighted Radford’s outdoor track & field season opener at this weekend’s Coastal Carolina Invitational.
Dobson posted a first-place mark in the hammer throw with his toss of 56.36m (184’11”), besting a field where the differential between the top finish and fifth spot was nearly 20 feet. His throw was two meters better than his previous personal best. Dobson also finished fourth in the shot put with a distance of 15.59m (51’0.75”).
Veatch topped her field in the hammer throw, hitting a mark of 54.79m (179’9”) to open her outdoor collegiate career.
Radford also got a first-place mark from senior Shemelia Brandon (Alton, Va./Halifax County) in the triple jump, with a leap of 12.05m (39’6.50”). The indoor Big South most outstanding field performer topped the field by more than two feet, and was two off her school record.
Other notable performances included junior Raschad Kelso’s (Appomattox, Va./Appomattox) second-place finish in the 400m dash, clocking in at 48.75, two-hundredths of a second off his personal-best.
Senior Joel Hanlon (Winchester, Va./Millbrook) posted a second-place time and a personal best in the 800m, checking in at 1:57.53.
Sophomore Ashlyn Sinclair (Silver Spring, Md./Montgomery Blair) added a pair of top-ten finishes and personal bests, clocking a time of 1:07.06 (8th) in the 400m hurdles and 2:20.43 (6th) in the 800m run.
