Six Athletes, Men's 4x400 Team to Represent Radford at NCAA Track & Field Regional

Three women's and three men's athletes, and the men's 4x400m relay team will compete for Radford at the NCAA East Regional track & field championships, May 29-30 at North Carolina A&T State University's Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro, N.C.

Athletes that earn top five finishes in their events automatically qualify for the NCAA Outdoor Championships that will be held June 10-13 in Fayetteville, Ark.

WOMEN'S REGIONAL ENTRIES

Shemelia Brandon
Brandon small
Event: Long Jump
Qualifying Time/Distance:  5.71m, auto qualifier as Big South champion (April 16)
Past appearances: 2008 (long, triple), 2007 (triple), 2006 (triple)
2009 Highlights:
-          Qualified for regionals in the long jump for the second straight season
-          Set the conference’s top distance of the season at the Big South meet
-          All-conference finish in the triple jump (second place)


Aimee Veatch
Veatch small
Event: Hammer throw
Qualifying Time/Distance: 54.79m, Coastal Carolina Invitational (March 13)
Past appearances: First
2009 Highlights:
-          Big South Outdoor Freshman of the Year; named Field Athlete of the Week March 25
-          Conference hammer throw champion; winning distance of 55.08m
-          Added third-place Big South showing in discus
-          Topped the regional qualifying mark (54.15m) six times



Britney Whittaker

Qualifying Time/Distance: 2:14.66, auto qualifier as Big South Champion (April 18)

-          Set the conference’s top 800m time in her win at the Big South meet
-          First career individual all-conference honor (Indoor DMR, 2008)




MEN'S REGIONAL ENTRIES

Matt Dobson

Event: Hammer throw
Qualifying Time/Distance: 57.20m, Big South Championships (April 16)
Past appearances: First
2009 Highlights:
-          Two first-place hammer throw finishes (Coastal Carolina Invite, Aggie Relays)
-          Topped the hammer throw qualifying standard (56.80m) for the second time with a throw of 59.38m at the Georgia Tech Invitational (May 15), setting the Big South’s top mark this season
-          Big South outdoor all-academic selection, second place hammer throw finish
Raschad Kelso
Kelso small
Event: 200m
Qualifying Time/Distance: 21.31, Liberty Twilight (April 30)
Past appearances: First (individual)
2009 Highlights:
-          Set the school record with his regional qualifying time at Liberty April 30
-          Posted podium performances in both the 200m (second) and 400m (third) at the Big South championships; his time at the conference championships in the 200 was school record-setting
-          Topped the field at Winthrop Invitational after setting a school record in 200m preliminaries

Olajuwon Jones

Event: 400m
Qualifying Time/Distance: 47.33, auto qualifier as Big South champion (April 18)
Past appearances: First (individual)
2009 Highlights:
-          Earned first career individual all-conference honor with his 400m championship
-          Topped the school’s 400m record in four consecutive meets, beginning with the Big South Championships
-          Surpassed the regional qualifying time (47.20) with a new school record time of 46.51 at the Georgia Tech Invitational (May 16), notching the Big South’s best time of the season
4x400 – Raschad Kelso, Olajuwon Jones, Jovan Coker, Ronquis Posey
4x400 small
Qualifying Time/Distance: 3:12.47, auto-qualifier as Big South champion
2009 Highlights:
-          Won the Big South championship to earn Radford’s second-straight regional entry
-          Two of the four legs from the 2008 team (Raschad Kelso, Olajuwon Jones) return
-          Set a new Patrick D. Cupp Memorial Stadium record at the Big South championships
