Alex Gregory's Brooklyn Cyclones Bio

Former Radford first baseman Alex Gregory (Great Falls, Va./Paul VI) was assigned to the Brooklyn Cyclones of the New York-Penn League (Short-Season A), following his selection by the New York Mets in the 2009 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft on June 10.
The recent 17th-round pick will not only be wearing a new number, going from his Radford uniform No. 14 to No. 7 for the Cyclones, he’ll also move from his familiar position of first base to the outfield.
Gregory and the Cyclones begin the 2009 season on Friday night, when they host the nearby Staten Island Yankees in an opening-weekend series at Keyspan Park in Brooklyn.
One of the most prolific hitters in school and Big South history, Gregory is one of two Highlanders active in professional baseball. Former Radford right-handed relief ace Ryan Speier (1998-2001) is in his fourth major-league season with the Colorado Rockies. Speier was placed on the disabled list on April 21, following an injury suffered during spring training. He worked 5 2/3 innings over five outings prior to his DL stint.
