Sayer Named to All-State Squad; Sayer and Watson Earn Doubles Recognition
Men's Tennis Huddle
RADFORD, Va. – Former Radford men’s tennis standout Martin Sayer (Hong Kong) was named to the VaSID (Virginia Sports Information Directors) All-State first team, while he and his doubles partner Zack Watson (Harrisonburg, Va./Eastern Mennonite) grabbed second-team honors as announced Wednesday afternoon.

Sayer, a four-time Big South Player of the Year, concluded his singles career as the all-time winningest player in Radford men’s tennis history with a 114-25 record.

Prior to making his fourth straight NCAA Singles Championships appearance, Sayer finished his conference career with an impressive 24-1 mark.

In the fall, he was the only current student-athlete named to the league’s “Best of the Best” as part of the Big South’s 25th anniversary celebration.

A mainstay in the national rankings since arriving on campus, Sayer posted a 17-13 mark against nationally-ranked players.

At the end of the regular season, Sayer joined former Highlander standout James Lloyd (2005-08) as the only players in school history to earn four all-conference singles honors. He also becomes Radford’s first three-time selection to the league’s all-conference doubles team.

A member of the Hong Kong Davis Cup team, Sayer advanced to the NCAA Singles Tournament Round of 32 as a freshman and sophomore.

To go along with winning 41 of their 50 matches since teaming up in 2006, Sayer and Watson climbed to as high as 46th in the rankings before finishing the spring with a 19-3 mark.

Sayer and Watson became the first Highlander tandem in school history to compete in the doubles portion of the NCAA Championships. The Big South all-conference performers entered the 2009 NCAA Doubles Championships ranked 54th in the latest ITA Rankings before concluding the year 51st.

Along with winning its fourth straight regular season title and third consecutive tournament title, Radford finished the 2009 season 20-4 overall and ranked 53rd in the national polls.
